Grace Kelly
The gown worn by Hollywood's brightest star on her way to becoming Princess of Monaco remains the ultimate benchmark of bridal elegance. Its quiet luxury shaped the taste of an entire generation of brides.
When Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III of Monaco, the world watched breathlessly. MGM studio gifted the actress her wedding gown, entrusting its creation to head costume designer Helen Rose, who had already dressed Grace in several films.
Design and Silhouette
The dress combined antique Brussels lace with ivory silk taffeta: a fitted bodice flowed into a gently flared skirt finishing in a modest train. A high neckline and long sleeves lent the look demure sophistication, softened by intricate lace detailing throughout. More than thirty craftspeople spent six weeks bringing the gown to life.
Impact on Fashion
After the ceremony, closed lace-sleeved bodices swept back into the mainstream, and designers worldwide began offering what became known as the "Grace silhouette." The gown is now held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where it continues to draw admiring crowds.
